Geocache Description:

** This is a new listing. The old cache has been archived to make room for the Erie Bayfront highway Geo-Trail. **

Same park but much different location.

The Anthony Wayne Blockhouse is a tribute to Gen. "Mad" Anthony Wayne and his legendary ghost. A reproduction of the original blockhouse was built in 1880 behind the Pennsylvania Soldiers' & Sailors' Home.

Anthony Wayne (January 1, 1745 – December 15, 1796) was a United States Army general and statesman. Wayne adopted a military career at the outset of the American Revolutionary War. "Mad" Anthony gained his nickname for his reckless courage during the Revolutionary War, once telling Washington "Give the order, sir, and I will lay seige to hell." After leading American forces to capture Detroit in 1796, Wayne stopped in Erie PA., and shortly died from a severe case of gout. He was buried under the blockhouse.

13 years later his son, Col. Isaac Wayne, claimed the body, to be interred in the family cemetery, in southeast PA. The cool temperatures of Erie had preserved the cadaver so well, that the body had to be declothed, dimembered, and the remaining flesh boiled from the bones. Supposedly, the attending physician, Dr. John Wallace, was so disgusted by the whole affair he threw his tools in the grave that now only held the clothes and stewed flesh of a war hero.

Legend has it that as the bones were transported to Radnor, PA from Erie, many were jolted out of the cart across the rugged terain. Every New Year's morning, the ghost of Wayne makes a "mad" dash across the state to claim his bones.

Should be a fairly easy find. The cache is fairly well hidden just off the pathway in a less busy area.

Please take a minute and reflect on the hundreds of honorable veterans now laid to rest at Veterans Memorial Cemetery just to your left on the drive out.
