Bedford Heritage Trail 3 - Historic Gas Station Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

haloedversionls: Coming through Bedford today to do a little maintenance on a few caches.

It seems that there really isn't a good place for this cache any longer. I've replaced this one more than a half dozen times over the years and due to its frequent mugglings, it has slowly been downgraded from a small to a smaller to a large micro to a bison. The last time I replaced it, I moved it to a new location because the original location was no longer suitable. I was not pleased with the new location and finding the cache today cinched it. I am no longer working in the area and it is much more difficult for me to adequately maintain this cache. This, coupled with the cache's almost yearly going missing, I have chosen to archive this cache in hopes that someone else can identify a better location for a cache near this park.

This cache had a good run and I am sad to see it be archived. Placed May 2011, Archived August 2016, 175 finds, 9 favorited points.

Thank you to those who found this cache and enjoyed it. Happy Caching!

Geocache Description:

IMPORTANT: Parking is available at the noted waypoint. Please do not park along the road or on the posted property. Thank you!

The Bedford Heritage Trail is in the first phase of planning for a larger trail to link the Bedford Springs Resort, Ft. Bedford Park, and Old Bedford Village with a pedestrian/bicycle oriented trail. Until the larger project is complete, the Bedford Heritage Trail invites visitors to explore historic buildings and places in the downtown Bedford area either by walking or biking a 1.3 mile loop. The trail will use the Ft. Bedford flag emblem (shown above) on signs and sidewalk markings for visitors to follow.

This cache is located just North of the historic Dunkle's Gulf Services gas station. This art deco-style service station was opened in 1933. The station's terra cotta tiles depict stylized geometric foliage and chevrons not seen in today's architecture. This is one of many historic sites built along the route 30 to attract travelers. You can also visit the giant Coffee Pot along Lincoln Highway to the West, and the giant Quarter along Lincoln Highway in Everett.

The cache location is along the edge of Fort Bedford Park. Please respect park hours and do not attempt this cache at night. The cache in on the park-side of the creek. Please do not tresspass onto the property on the other side of the creek. Thank you.

Also, be sure to replace the cache where you found it.

Placed with permission from the staff and management of the Fort Bedford Park; Thanks, Lisa!
Special thanks to Dennis and the 'Crack Staff' of the Bedford County Visitors Bureau for making this series happen!
