Geocache Description:

At this cache location you will find a sign indicating to the traffic on State Highway 1 that they have passed a major circle of latitude. The sign reads "Latitude 40° South" and is located on the southern side of the Porewa Stream, which SH1 crosses over on a bridge designated '9010'.

The 40th parallel South runs through only 4 countries as it travels eastwards from the Prime Meridian. The first piece of land it hits is King Island, part of Tasmania in Australia - a full 143 degrees eastwards from its starting point. It then crosses Flinder's Island, also in Tasmania, before carrying on and finally reaching the North Island of New Zealand - it passes just north of Marton and just south of Hunterville, and crosses SH1 roughly where this cache is.

It continues on and runs along the town of Waipukurau, where there is a similar themed cache. Once it hits the ocean again, it has along way to go before it reaches its next destination in Chile, and soon after crosses into Argentina.

The sign itself is not placed exactly on 40 South, but actually slightly north - note the GPS reading for the sign and cache, whether this was because a different datum was used, or whether access was easier here, we aren't quite sure.

Access & Cache Details

Considering this is located on the busiest and most important route in the country, access is key. Luckily - there is quite a bit of space an you can park off the road.

For Southbound travellers, as you approach the cache, indicate well beforehand, and pull off onto the grass past the bridge and cache, and walk back to the site itself.

Northbound geocachers should indicate that they intend to turn right onto Te Houhou road (which is about 130 metres south of the sign). Park up to the left on the grass before the railway crossing, and walk to the cache.

Please obey all road rules and use common sense. The cache is 400mL plastic jar near the sign (not on or near the bridge or highway, however!). There is a small prize for FTF.
