Geocache Description:

Wada Pass is most highest pass.

The Wada Pass is a pass of Nakasendo that is the highway where Edo (Tokyo) and Kyo (Kyoto) were connected in Edo period.
The top was above sea level 1,600m in this pass, and the altitude was the high dangerous place in the highway of Edo period here.
Therefore, Shimosuwa post station and Wada post station that was the stage in the foot in the pass were seemed to a lot of guests who stayed before excess of the pass, and have prospered very much.

Still, this old road remains.
It is possible to pass by the road's being maintained in recent years.

Both an old road and now road (Highway No.20) go near cache.
The site in the restaurant where the traveler who got over a pass took a rest remains to be near.
It was a special product in those days, and "Chikaramochi (Chikaramochi is a meaning of rice cake that can gain power. It is the same pronunciation in Japanese as the meaning of "Powerful". It seems to be able to gain power to be able to take tiredness by eating this, and to climb the pass.)" is still sold in the drive-in.

和田峠は、江戸時代に江戸(東京)と京(京都)を結んでいた街道、中山道の峠です。
この峠は頂上が標高1,600mで、この峠は当時の主要な街道で一番標高が高い難所でした。
そのため、峠の麓の宿場であった下諏訪宿と和田宿は、峠越え前に宿泊する客が多く、大変栄えたそうです。

今でも、この昔の道は残っています。
近年は道が整備されて通れるようになっています。

キャッシュの近くには、昔の道と、今の道(国道20号)の両方が通っています。
近くに、峠を越える旅人が休憩した茶屋の跡地が残っています。
その頃からの名物だった、「力餅」が今でもドライブインで販売されています。
キャッシュを見つけたら食べてみて下さい。
