Boer War Memorial Traditional Cache
Toriaz: I've given this one some thought, and decided that I'm tired of replacing the container only to have people not replace it in a spot that can't be seen by anyone walking by.

At 85 hectares, Parramatta Park is one of the largest parks in
western Sydney. The park includes historic buildings, archeological
zones, historic views and landscapes, remnant and regenerated
Cumberland Plain vegetation, waterways and extensive open fields.
The main gates on Macquarie Street open at 6am & close at 6pm
(8pm during daylight savings). The Westmead gate opens at 10am and
closes at 3pm on weekdays, but on weekends and public holidays this
gate opens at 6am and closes at 6pm (8pm during Daylight
Savings).
The park is a great place to come for a bike ride, walk or run, or
a relaxing picnic. There are playgrounds, BBQs, picnic tables, a
cafe near the river and a restaurant in the old Government
House.
This cache is hidden near the Boer War Memorial, overlooking The
Crescent.
The Memorial commemorates the Parramatta Lancers' contribution to
the 1899-1902 War fought by the British Empire against the Boer
Republic. It was dedicated in April 1904 and incorporates columns
and stone recycled from Parramatta Court House (demolished
1903).
Nearby the Memorial is the site of the oldest building in
Parramatta - Governor Phillip's Redoubt, build 2nd November 1788.
Phillip named the original settlement "The Crescent" because of the
land formation.
The Crescent's natural ridgeline once framed a billabong and it was
the location for fruit, vegetable and horticultural specimen
experimentation for the growth of imported plant species under
Australian conditions. These plants were a valuable source
distributed to the early colonists to assist their agricultural
efforts.
Before European cultivation however, the Crescent was home to the
local clan of the Dharug, the Burramattagal who had occupied the
area for thousands of years. There is evidence of their occupation
in the area in the form of scarred trees and artefact
scatters.
Despite extensive infilling in 1977 when the area was converted to
an amphitheatre, the shape of the original landmark can still be
seen.
This should be an easy find. The container is a 200 ml sistema, so
will only take small swaps or trackables. You could do this as a
park & grab if you really wanted to, but I think it would be
nicer if you slow down a little, get on your bike for a ride and
spend some time enjoying the park.
