Geocache Description:

Climb the highest peak in eastern Crete to find this cache.

Mt. Dikti is most easily approached via its SW ridge from Avasami Pass. The pass can be reached by taking the E4 trail either from Selakano to the east or Limnakarou to the north.

Our hiking group of 4 from New Mexico, USA first tried the Selakano approach, but had several difficulties: Finding the way out of the village was confusing and poorly marked and cost us an hour trying different possibilities. The day we hiked, the wind was very strong, gusting to 50 miles per hour higher up. Finally, clouds blowing over the top of Dikti and down the SE side created white-out conditions, with visibility less than 30 meters. So that day we didn't even make it to the pass.

Two days later we started from Limnakarou - take the paved road directly up out of Koudoumalia, contrary to what "The High Mountains of Crete" guide book seems to suggest. This time we had a perfect day with limitless visibility and not much wind until we got to the Dikti ridge. From the pass on up we found more and more snow, including some steep snow fields we skirted around the top, since we didn't have ice axes with us.

The cache is placed about 20 meters SE of the top by a fairly large smooth boulder. I believe caches that are this hard to get to shouldn't be hard to find.

Note on maintenance: This cache was placed while on vacation in Crete. OMILOS has generously agreed to maintain this cache.
