Orchard Road got its name from the nutmeg, pepper and fruit
orchards or the plantations that the road led to in the mid-1800s.
Commercial development only began in the twentieth century, and
took off in the 1970s. Now, Orchard Road is a major retail and
entertainment hub and it has been consistently ranked the
most-visited attraction in Singapore.
In 2009, Orchard Road underwent a $40 million revamp, with the
addition of new street lamps, planter boxes, urban green rooms,
street tiling, and flower totem poles. The area was divided into
three zones characterized by different themes, namely the Tanglin
Zone, Orchard Zone and Somerset Zone.

The Somerset Zone, bound by the intersections between Cairnhill
Road and Buyong Road, features a fruit theme to reflect Orchard
Road’s early history as a nutmug and fruit plantation.
Cinnamon and nutmeg trees have been planted on the grass bank
opposite the Concorde Hotel and as you walk along the pedestrian
path between Killiney Road and Oxley Road, you will notice the
distinctive metallic floor tiles featuring tropical fruits that had
been cultivated in this area in the past.
The cache is placed in the Somerset Zone. So halt your bustling
footsteps along one of the busiest streets in Singapore and enjoy
the search!
Happy Geocaching!
