Geocache Description:

An urban cache suitable for a driveby that requires stealth as it's close to a busy junction and bus stop.

Before trying to locate the cache take a seat, enjoy the urban landscape and consider the history of the area.

Immediately behind your seat is a flowerbed which has a stone cross in the brickwork. This symbol represents the old Catholic school that used to be on the site of the Aldi superstore behind you.

The catholic school moved to the the site of the old Balshaws School that was on the junction of School Lane/Golden Hill Lane. Balshaws relocated to its present site on Church Road.

Once the catholic school left the Towngate/Westgate site it became a garage and car showroom and then a carpet shop before being demolished to make way for Aldi.

Our property is in the area and was built in 1931. The plan to the old title deeds show that in 1930 Westgate did not exist and is marked only as a public footpath. At the bottom end of Westgate (the cache is located at the top end) leading down to the entrance of the fire station you will still see the remains of the original public footpath.

Sitting on the bench and looking over your left shoulder you will see at the top of Westgate 'St Andrews Terrace', a row of terrace houses. These were the only buildings existing on Westgate in 1930.

Looking to your left you will see the Ship Inn. This was in existence in 1840. (see map on bleach works 1)

Part of Towngate used to be known as Water Street. From your location going left to the Gables at the top of Hough Lane was Water Street. (I believe it may have been called Water Street due to water springs and this may have some truth as when neighbours were constructing an extension they discovered running water underground)

Looking back at old maps it is clear that in the early 1900's Leyland was still a small village with lots of surrounding fields and there has been rapid development to turn those fields into housing.
