Sartai – is the Forth largest lake in Lithuania (1337 ha). The largest hollows of the lake and the steepest banks are in the northern part of Sartai. The bans here are up to 30 meters high and the deepest place reaches 22 meters. The greatest width of the lake is 950 meters while average width is 500 meters. The ban line winds almost 80 km. There are 7 islands in the lake. The area of the biggest island is 6,5 ha and it is called the Big Isle. Lake Sartai is similar to a branchy tree, the stem of whitch stretches in north-south direction 12,7 km and its branches go to both sides and there are two lakes – Zalve, Zaduojis – detached from them. Total length of branches is even 30 km. In the narrowest place there is hardly 400meters long marchy lowland between Kriaunakumpis and Audrakumpis and from the earliest times it is called Pervalka (Eng. Portage). In the incoming of spring it is often flooded by water and huge island emerge in Lake Sartai. Elderly people illustrate the origin of name Sartai by legends where light-bay horses drowned in the lake during horserace are mentioned. It is not known how much truth there is in legends but horserace on Lake Sartai has been arranged since 1865. Since 1905 these races became traditional and in 1955 they were declared republican. Traditionally, the horsece is arranged each year on the first Saturday of February. If the ice on Lake Sartai is not strong enough the race takes place in hippodrome. BYOP!
