Jerome
K Jerome writer of the famous Three Men In A Boat was a long time
resident of Ewelme.
Born in
Walsall and then brought up in poverty in London he was the son of
a Parson come Ironmonger.
When he
left school he tried his hand at numerous jobs including acting but
his passion was for writing and he has many publications to his
name however he is most famously remembered for his comic novel set
on the Thames.
In 1988
he married the love of his life Ettie and they honeymooned on a
little boat on the Thames, this was to be the inspiration of his
Three Men In A Boat stories. Immensely successful it was
responsible for a huge increase of tourism to the
Thames.
When
WW1 broke out he was turned down for active service in his own
country and subsequently enrolled in the French Army and became an
Ambulance Driver (that makes him a good bloke in my
books).
In 1927
whilst on a driving tour of Devon to London, via Cheltenham and
Northampton he suffered a massive stroke and died at Northampton
General, his ashes are buried in Ewelme churchyard along with his
wife Ettie, his stepdaughter and his sister Blandina, there is also
a memorial to his older brother Milton Melancthon who died as a
child.
