Geocache Description:

An easy cache following a lovely walk from the delightful Marwick Bay public car park.If you decide to walk along the shore be careful as the rocks, when wet, can be very slippery as the cache owner found to his cost!

Marwick Bay is a fantastic location with fine views all round. The sea, particularly in stormy weather, is a great spectacle as it crashes on to the cliffs leading up to Marwick Head and the famous Kitchener Memorial.

Until 1896 local fishing boats pulled up on the shore to the north of Sand Geo. In that year a tramp steamer was put aground and, partly as a result of this, and because it was a more sheltered spot the fishermen moved their boats to this location. The reconstructed huts were originally built at the very end of the 19th Century and the very early years of the 20th Century. All the men were local farmers and at one time there were as many as seven boats working out of South Geo. The remains of the winch can be seen at the top of the site.

The cache is a 35mm film canister with pencil and log.
