The Ceresio lake has a surface of 48.7 km ², of which approximately 18 km ² belonging to the Italian Republic, the rest of the Swiss Confederation and has a curiously intricate form. Excavated within the circle of Lombardy's pre-Alps, it recalls similar landscapes as the Lake Como area, although about three times smaller.
The lake is full of fish: with the exception of a few protected areas, as in the mouths of rivers Cassarate, Laveggio, and Magliasina Vedeggio, you can fish anywhere, even if with different regulations. The major species that populate the Lugano is the Bleak (extinct following the introduction of roach and now in recovery), Eel, Barbel, Largemouth Bass, Burbot, Cache, Carp, Whitefish, Chub, Perch, Pike, Gardon, Alpine Char, Tench and Trout. Protected species are Bleak, the Grayling and native Crayfish.

Il lago Ceresio ha una superficie di 48,7 km², dei quali circa 18 km² pertinenti alla Repubblica italiana, il resto alla Confederazione Svizzera e presenta una forma curiosamente intricata. Scavato entro la cerchia delle prealpi lombarde, richiama più o meno gli stessi paesaggi del Lario comasco, sebbene sia circa tre volte più piccolo.
Il lago è molto pescoso: a parte alcune zone protette, come nelle foci dei fiumi Cassarate, Laveggio, Magliasina e Vedeggio, è possibile pescare ovunque anche se a condizioni diverse. Le maggiori specie che popolano il Ceresio sono l'Agone, l'Alborella (estinta in seguito all'introduzione del gardon ed ora in ripresa), l'Anguilla, il Barbo, il Persico trota, la Bottatrice, la Cache, la Carpa, il Coregone (Coregone bondella e Coregone lavarello), il Cavedano, il Lucioperca, il Luccio, il Persico reale, il Pigo, il Gardon, il Salmerino alpino, la Scardola, la Savetta, la Tinca e la Trota lacustre. Le specie protette sono le Alborelle, il Temolo e i gamberi di fiume autoctoni.
