Much of the farmland surrounding Grove City was sold to officers and soldiers for their service in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Many sold their land to immigrants while others settled and became citizens of this little prairie town.
Orders Road School This cache was placed here to call attention to this little turn-of-the-century schoolhouse that is right out of the pages of Little House on the Prairie. Cachers who visit during daylight hours can peer in the windows to see the old pot-bellied stove and the many desks with their slates and chalk. Orders Road School Educational standards for rural children did not exist during the early 1800s, but by the 1870s, shortly after the Civil War, most states had enacted compulsory education laws. In rural areas, township school districts built schools like this one and assessed local citizens for upkeep and teacher's salaries. Teachers passed a county examination for certification. Besides instruction duties, they kept records, cleaned the schoolhouse, and kept it heated during the cold months. Three generations of Jackson Township students between ages five and sixteen received their primary education here. Following consolidation, the school district deeded this building to the farm's owners in 1928. It was restored in 2000-2002 and is opened upon request for tour groups. There is plenty of convenient and adjacent parking available and it should take only 1minute to get from the car to the cache.
