Geocache Description:

The Duke’s Monument at Barncluith was designed by David Thompson to commemorate William Alexander 11th Duke of Hamilton who died in 1863.

This beautiful circular stone and granite structure cost £1500 to build, and this sum was raised by his tenants and friends.

The monument was once home to a five foot bronze bust of the Duke which has since been removed and is currently on display in Low Parks Museum, Hamilton. When it was built, this momument overlooked both The Duke's home at Hamilton Palace (visit link) and his hunting lodge at Chatelherault. It is on a steep sided gorge so be careful with children and dogs.

Cache can be accessed by road via Barncluith Road or on foot via Chatelherault Country Park.

From Barncluith Road there is a large gate as you head up to the cache but it should not be locked and you should just be able to push it open. It is a public right of way for both cars and on foot. The road is single track and is used by milk tankers accessing High Parks farm. There is a small parking space up the hill from monument.

Coming from Chatelherault, cross the Duke's Bridge, go right, up past Cadzow Castle, follow the grey stone road to the top and then follow the Duke's Momument signage. GPS might try and lead you another way but this is the best route to take. It is beautiful in the spring with bluebells galore. For map of Chatelherault Country Park go to (visit link)

The cache is hidden in sight of the monument. The cache is a 0.5l tupperware click and close box in a freezer bag. Original contents of the cache are 3 happy birthday party balloons, some erasers, a flowery pen and a Homer Simpson UK travel bug.
