Ani's Land.



New Zealand is famous for its lakes; Taupo, Wanaka, Rotorua… Aniwhenua. Not as famous as its bigger cousins, Lake Aniwhenua is nestled at the end of the Waiohou Valley on the edge of Te Urewera National Park in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Mid-way between Taupo and Whakatane and some fifty kilometers southeast of Rotorua, the lake is a hidden gem for holidaymakers and trampers though trout fishermen might argue that they are luckiest visitors.

As the trees thin around the shores of the lake don’t be surprised to see deer, rabbits, the odd possum and if you’re lucky an elusive wild pig; though hunters have made both the deer and pigs very wary of human contact. Its remoteness makes it an idyllic spot for the keen fisherman; last time I visited I fished a number of the tiny streams flowing in and out of the lake without seeing another angler, and often the only thing to break the peace was the unpleasant crack and echo of a hunter’s rifle. That said if hunting’s your thing the local lodge cater very well with guides (for fishing and hunting) and even helicopter drops to remote wilderness locations. For years some friends and I have used the lake as an annual escape from the rat race with the fishing as a sideline to catching up with old friends, sinking some cold beers from the chilly bin and burning some burgers on the barbecue. That said, the fishing never fails to impress; maybe because the lake is so quiet compared to it’s more accessible and popular counterparts nearby, or maybe because the fish are wild trout. Whatever the reason, we’ve never had to tell tall tales about the one that got away because the ones that didn’t have made fine eating on the barbecue back at camp!
