Rund 2km südöstlich von Menzingen - an der Strasse entlang den
Twerfallen zum Mangeli - liegt die Schwandegg und das Schloss
Schwandegg. Hier wurde im Jahre 1839 durch den Tier- und Naturarzt
Karl Joseph Arnold die "Curanstalt Schwandegg" eröffnet. In der
zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts erhielt das Schloss durch den
Anbau auf der Nordseite und eine Aufstockung das heutige Aussehen.
Um 1900 wurde das Schloss ein beliebtes Kurhaus. Heute gehört das
Schloss Schwandegg einer (leider) rechtskatholischen
Priesterbruderschaft. Am Rande des ehemaligen Schlossparkes findet
sich eine Gloriette, ein kleines Türmchen mitten im Walde. Es
diente als Aussichts- und Erholungsraum. Als die Bäume des Waldes
noch nicht so hoch waren, sah man von hier aus den Säntis, deshalb
heisst dieses Gloriette im Volksmund auch
„Säntisblick“. :
English Version
Gloriette (from the 12th century French for "little glory") is a
building in a garden erected on a site that is elevated with
respect to the surroundings. The structural execution and shape can
vary greatly, often in the form of a pavilion, more or less open on
the sides. Approximately 2 km south-east of Menzingen - along the
road from the Twerfallen to Mangeli - you will find the Schwandegg
and the castle Schwandegg. This was the place where Doctor Karl
Joseph Arnold, a veterinarian and naturopath, opened the
"Curanstalt Schwandegg" in 1839. In the second half of the 19th
century, the castle received today's appearance by adding one floor
as well as an annex on the north side. Around 1900, the castle
became a popular spa. Today, Castle Schwandegg belongs
(unfortunately) to a right wing Catholic Priest Fraternity. On the
edge of the former castle park a Gloriette is found, a small tower
in the middle of the forest. It served as a scenic and recreational
area. At a time when the trees of the forest were not so high, you
could see the Säntis mountain. Therefore, in vernacular, this
Gloriette is also called "Säntisblick".
