Geocache Description:

Part of a circular route with GC2WZZZ and GC2VXVD mainly along an old railway track.

This cache is in a green cutting on the site of the former Barrow Island Railway Station. If you approach from Island Road you may pass between two gate posts which still mark the entrance to the station and are the only remaining remnant of the old station.

Visit the related web site above for more historical photographs.

The station on Barrow Island was used to enable workers at Vickers Limited (as it was then known) to commute directly between the shipyard and nearby towns served by the Furness Railway. There used to be two trains a day, (four - ten coach trains a day during WWI). One went north to Millom & the other south to Grange.

This railway link was severed in 1966 when the famous Cradle Bridge across the docks was closed permanently for safety reasons. The closure of Millom's iron works especially spelt the demise of the Cradle Bridge which was the link from the main line to Shipyard Junction in Island Road.

Map section showing the railway lines.

The cache is a small locking-lid box with a pen and logbook and room for a couple of trackables.

There is a small car park at the very end of Island Road adjacent the Bowling Green/Playing Fields.

Ground can be soft in wet weather otherwise wheelchairs and strollers can traverse the cutting although help will be needed to reach the cache.

Beware of muggles. This is a popular dog walking route and may be busy with children playing in the summmer. Also watch you aren't being overlooked from the playing fields above. Please re-hide well.
