The Texas Spirit Quest
is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.
There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries, tombstones and local lore.
We are all aware that plenty of the early European settlers of Central Texas were Hispanic, German, or Czech. But who knew there were also Poles wandering about? This cemetery was established in 1896, around the time that the now-vanished Polish Catholic community of Polonia sprung up. By 1939, it seems that most or all of the town was abandoned. While this site is a bit remote, it does receive visitors (some of whom showed up as recently as the day before this cache was placed, according to the log book in the mailbox), and there is a small outdoor pavilion where an annual outdoor Mass is conducted. Note the historical marker nearby.
