Geocache Description:

This cache is located in Page, or Paige, Cemetery located in section 28, Handy Twp, Livingston County.

If you have ever found yourself driving down Gregory Road south of Fowlerville, you probably have driven past Page Cemetery without even knowing it. This small cemetery is close to the road, but fairly well hidden. And much like most rural family cemeteries, it is long out of service, most of the grave stones are broken, but the township takes good care of the ground.

One thing that I like about these cemeteries is they are like a window into the past. They chronicle the struggles of families who came and may now be long gone, the only things tying someone's history to an area. But no matter how much the land around them has changed, they remain there mostly unchanged, marking the presence of a family who helped make the area what it is.

Page cemetery is one of those places. Ezekiel Page and his family came to Handy Township in 1848. Before long, his extended family came out and joined him in this section along Gregory Road. Over the next 50 years members of the Page family farmed the area and were buried in their small cemetery, beginning with Ely, Ezekiel's daughter, in 1850, Ezekiel himself, two members of the Morse family, and ending with GW Page in 1887. Finally, sometime between 1895 and 1915, the last Page had moved on from the area, leaving only the family cemetery as a reminder of who was here before us.

You'll be looking for a camo'd Lock n Lock hidden away from the graves. While you're here think of how much the land has changed since this family first came here to carve a living out of the wilderness.
