Endangered Species (Wellington) Traditional Cache
Tim+Jed: It's a bit funny that a cache we thought might get archived due to new construction has infact been done over by some other random person- and the site continues to remain empty and an eyesore. We have tried replacing the cache, but it proved a bit difficult to do so successfully- given the nature of the hide. We've also considered placing a new cache in the location, but think it's better to archive it and give others a chance to use the location for some new cache idea. Thanks to all those who have hunted and/or found the cache.

Endangered
Species
This cache is
under threat of its life! It’s very existence is constantly
in the balance, with the grim hand of development imperatives
hanging over it. At any moment an unsuspecting muggle workman may
be dispatched to the site and will snuff out this delicate
geo-life… Get in quick and log while you
can…
One of the effects of the Global
Financial Crisis is that a lot of new building work has stopped in
the city- unfortunately this hasn’t stopped some of the
demolition- especially the needless stuff- and this site is one
example of this.
On this site once stood the wonderful
Settlement Restaurant, an icon in the development of
Wellington’s café culture, and a lovely place for a meal and
a coffee at any time. The restaurant shut down a number of years
ago, and since then the building has sat empty, becoming more and
more run down, but at least the building was still there and part
of the city-scape of Willis Street. A few months ago however the
building’s developer/owners elected to have the building torn
down and the site cleared (avoiding some potentially tricky
upcoming heritage issues) and so now we have this empty ugly
site…. Who knows how long this site will remain as a cleared
eyesore- it could be years…or it might only be a few months
(or weeks)- so get in quick and log this endangered species of
cache before who knows what happens to it!
In constant danger though it may be-
today at least
the cache is still happily alive and
well. We will keep a close eye on it and if and when the threat
under which it lives ever comes to pass, then the cache will be
sadly- and immediately- archived.
This location is quite exposed to the
public so please use extreme stealth to ensure your finding
technique doesn't further shorten the already limited life of this
cache. The difficulty rating reflects the exposure combined with
the camouflage. Remember to bring your own pen as well. The cache
is a well hidden black resene test pot (~100ml) accessable from the
public walkway (not to be confused with the Willis Street
footpath). There are two hints to help. Oh- and being in the city
my averaged GPS signal was all over the place (+-8m)- so that is
going to make it fun as well!
UPDATE 3 August 2011- While on the site today, I noted a builder
was there, chatting on his cell phone, his dog waiting patiently on
the back of the ute! Development things are maybe starting to
happen, so if you are interested in this cache- don't hesitate- get
in and find it before it goes from being Endangered to become
extinct!
