Revolution Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

SpikyTyke: It has been my pleasure to look after an elderly relative for the last 2 years - however I haven't found the time to either go geocaching or maintain the caches I have. Unfortunately therefore I am archiving all my caches. I hope to be able to come back to caching at some point. Best wishes to all.

Geocache Description:

Nano (sorry Budlaw) close to busy road and junction so take care. There is no need to step over barrier.

Periodically I drive on Stonegate Road, sometimes on my way to caches, and had a bit of a ‘oh my gosh’ moment – what is a stone kennel doing in the middle of the road? I had to stop and have a look and I was most surprised at what I found – a Well – or at least where the Well housing had been moved to – and there was a very interesting inscription -

'Bog in the adjoining field draind spring open'd and conducted hither. For the benefit of the passenger and the Neighbouring House. Novr 5th 1788. The 100th Anniversary from the landing of King William. In memory of which happy Era. This is by Joseph Oates inscribed The Revolution Well'.

On Leodis.com there are some photos (in ascending date order from 1900 to the present) (visit link) (visit link) (visit link) (visit link) (visit link) (visit link)

The Well was moved slightly from its original location in approximately 1920.

Joseph Oates of Weetwood Hall, inherited Carr Manor House when his father died. this was in 1779, he began a programme of improvements to the estate. The Revolution Well is a listed building.

King William is of course William of Orange, King William III of England, who landed at Torbay on 5th November 1688 – and in the (no so) Bloodless ‘Glorious Revolution’ overthrew the unpopular King James II and his Catholic 2nd wife Maria, whose newly born son James Stuart threatened to take the succession away from his Protestant daughter Mary (from his 1st marriage) who was married to William.
But James wasn’t finished, later as the ‘Old Pretender’ inspiring the nearly successful Jacobite rising, and later still his son, Charles Stuart – the ‘New Pretender’ or ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’ inspiring another attempt. James, Maria, Charles, and his younger brother Henry are all buried in St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
