Geocache Description:

This cache is located at The University at Buffalo’s South campus on Winspear ave in Buffalo. This cache is not meant to be a hard cache to find but meant to bring you to an information and viewing area for a pair of nesting Peregrine Falcons here at UB. Bring your cameras and binoculars or other viewing scopes.

I worked in the Mackay Power House, the building with the Tower and have had the great opportunity of being able to work with the DEC in taking care of the nesting box and banding of the Falcon chicks. I hope you enjoy the Peregrines as much as I have. The cache is small so bring your own pen. No night caching as you are in a neighborhood. There is plenty of parking on Winspear ave. Do not park on campus. You might get a ticket. Turn the top of the container to find the cache. Do not try and pull the top up. Back in 2009 in partnership with the DEC, UB built and installed a Peregrine Falcon nesting box for a pair of Falcons that were seen the previous couple years using the Mackay Tower as a perching area. The falcons took to the nesting box right away and in 2009 they had four chicks. In 2010 they had three chicks and this year 2011 they have four chicks. With the falcons deciding to stay UB installed its first web cam in 2010. With the web cam being a big success UB installed a second web cam with a different angle. There is now a third cam. You are able to view the Falcons from these web cams at anytime. While at the viewing area look up to your left at the Mackay Tower and you will be able to see the nesting box. You should be able to see the Falcon in the box with binoculars. Look around the tower and you might see one perched on one of the many ledges or see them flying in and out of the box as they bring in food for the chicks.
