Geocache Description:

Devil's Dyke is an Anglo Saxon earthwork that stretches 7 1/2 miles from the Fen edge at Reach across the Chalk Grassland at Newmarket finishing in the wooded clay ridges of Wooditton.

As you follow the trail you will learn more about this interesting monument and the land that surrounds it.

I'd not advise taking buggies due to the changes in elevation and uneven narrow pathways in places, also be aware that in parts the sides do get fairly steep. Oh and bring tweezers!
****

Gallows hill the best preseved section of the dyke 34 feet (10.5m) high from the ditch bottom to the bank top.

If you look over towards Swaffham Priors 2 mills to your west you'll see the Gallows Hill currently all that sits here is a High voltage power line but this hill has quite a history.

As the name depicts it was the spot where the Burwell Gallows stood in the 14th Century and before that a Romano Celtic Temple and mausoleum stood upon this spot.

Nearby Swaffham Prior was used as
a pagan Saxon burial ground in the 5th and 6th centuries.

Now if you look forward up the path towards Reach and turn your gaze to the right sat behind the big ugly pylons on a clear day you can make out Ely Cathedral rising up majestically on its high ground on the horizon, known as the ship of the fens.
