Geocache Description:

Cache Need To Know

You are looking for a NOVELTY container with a 35mm inside it, which as it is proving to be the one that keeps getting muggled DOES NOT contain a clue for the Bonus cache. Be brave and have a good dig around, xy's are pretty close on two devices we've tested it on, that includes a smart phone. All the other info about the walk in general is in EW01 Ewelme - Walk Info

Don't Need To Know But Might Be Of Interest

Alices success at holding everything together was short lived. Her son John had a fairly trouble free life but Royal jealousies were brewing towards the end of his life.

His successor Edmund had a much harder time of it as Henry VII decided to confiscate much of the De La Pole lands and Edmund was exiled to Spain and Ewelme manor became a Royal Palace, something of a bit of a des res in the country.

After Henry VII death his son Henry VIII had Edmund executed and carried on using the manor as a hunting retreat. It is rumoured that Henry VIII dabbled his feet in Kings Pool in the middle of the village and may even have been thrown in by local maidens. This we will never know the truth of but undoubtedly he would have struck an imposing figure around the village on his visits.

Later on Queen Elizabeth I would have been seen around the village more than once. After her reign the Manor fell into disrepair and went through a host of tenants. Nowadays it is a shadow of its former self and only a portion of it remains.

Amazingly enough despite all the Royal intrigues and plots the School and Almshouses still remained in the possession of the charity set up by Alice De La Pole.
