Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted location. This is the location of the original site of Fort Dummer. Fort Dummer was the first permanent European settlement in Vermont, in 1724.

Fort Dummer was a 180-square foot wooden stockade with 12 guns, manned by 55 men. The fort was named after Lieutenant Governor William Dummer, who was acting governer of Massachusetts at the time.

There is a granite monument that commemorates the site. The monument was moved to its current location when the Vernon dam was built in 1908, and this area was flooded.

Fort Dummer State Park, nearby, is named after the fort but is not where the fort was nor is it the location of the monument.

To find the cache, go 1183 feet at 310 degrees from the posted coordinates.

You will be a looking for a non-winter friendly micro at a busy location.

(Now might be a good time to learn how to project a waypoint using your GPS unit or other method. You don't need a boat, unless you want to figure it out the old-fashioned way.)
