Geocache Description:

Went back to replace the temp, but replaced with the original instead... thanks to GCandJC! Now I will just have to place another cache since I made a box!

Do You Speak Algonquian?

(A Part of The Brooks' Frame Bog / Herrick Fen GeoCache Series!)

Who Will Be FTF??

Placed with the gracious permission of the Nature Conservancy, who co-owns and manages this wonderful preserve! Thank You Steve Ross and Karen Adair for your kind help!

Frame Bog / Herrick Fen is home to 2 important populations. First - the Bayberry(cinquefoil-sedge), which is a state endangered plant, and can only be found in 2 other locations in Ohio.

Also important (and more my focus for this cache), is the Tamarack tree. The Tamarack is unique in that it is a conifer tree (pine needles / pine cones), that SHEDS IT NEEDLES like leaves each fall! Well, this intrigued me when reading about the preserve, so I looked it up for some facts, and took some pictures when I placed the cache.

So - Do you speak Algonquian? I bet you know at least one word - Tamarack is derived from the Algonquian Native American language word for this tree!

WARNING!

Poison Oak, Poison Ivy, Bumble Bees, Ticks, Thorns, Mud, and all assortment of other dangers are present in the woods after you leave the boardwalk!

The Nature Conservancy warned me that Poison Sumac can be encountered if you wander off the trail. STAY ON THE TRAIL. All the caches are on the trail.
Sumac is nasty stuff...look it up if you doubt me. Some botanists even say it is the most toxic plant in North America. Enough said.

The Preserve is fairly difficult to find...a sort of geocache of its own, really! I highly recommend using the waypoint for the "entrance" and having a quick look on Google Maps before setting out! Here are some helpful items as well:

North of South, either way you are coming from, TAKE SR 43 (you get lost on back roads)...then:
-
from points South, go all the way through Kent, turn left on Ravenna Rd (2.1 miles), then right onto Seasons 0.6 miles to the "Lane Entrance" waypoint.
- from points North, get to Streetsboro, then to SR 43 south, the first light south of SR 14/ SR 303 is Seasons Rd. - turn right, 2.2 miles to "Lane Entrance" waypoint.

From the North, you'll see this sign -

From the South, you'll see this sign -

The Preserve is 0.2 miles down the lane... Drive forward across the tracks. Follow the lane to the right. Stay on the lane as it turns back to the left. Cross over a small stream bridge. The parking lot is on the right.

Happy Caching Everyone!
