This cache is to draw attention to the Solo night market, which was newly created by the Solo mayor, Joko Widodo to promote Batik and other handicraft products from Solo and to create an interest spot for local and international tourism. In the same street there is also Pasar Triwindu, the local Antiques market, which as well provides a nice sight seeing point, just beware, most of the items on sale are far from being antique.
Solo together with Yogya is one of the main centres of traditional Javanese Culture. Even Yogya is better know to the international traveller, Solo has his own, special charm – the atmosphere in town is more laid back and less commercial than in Yogya.
And, with our new mayor we are really lucky – while the last two mayors used their posts to mainly enrich themselves (something not to unusual in Indonesia) Joko Widodo, or Jokowi as he is called, made it his mission to clean up Solo, plant trees and palms everywhere, create new public parks and public space, enhance public transport, renovate traditional markets and introduce quite a range of cultural events throughout the year. So no wonder for his second term he was re-elected with 89 percent of votes (without fraud).
The night market was also his invention and Pasar Triwindu, the antique market, got a big revamp 2 years ago.
Formerly a busy street lined with electrical supplies shop, the street has gone trough a major change and now has become a favorite meeting point for the people of Solo to sit outside in the evenings. Note - the night market is only on Saturday evenings.
Also very close is the Kraton Makunegaran, which you can visit in the morning and see some traditional dance practice always on Wednesday starting at 10 AM. There is also a very nice al fresco restaurant in traditional style just at the end of the street.
This is a nano cache. Please be extremely careful when retrieving and replacing the cache – as most of the time someone will be watching you (and the actual cache container is already the 3rd replacement). If you have the time the best method will probably be to take it with you first, sign it somewhere else and bring it back later.
