Introduction.
This is the second cache in
the Towitta trilogy. Ideally, to follow the story you should
first visit GC291E9 - The Towitta
Tragedy.
The next and final one in the series is
GC2WNX8 – My Sister’s
Keeper
Background.
Following the brutal murder of
her sister Bertha at their farm near Towitta on New Years Day 1902,
and the subsequent trial where she was acquitted of committing the
heinous act, Mary Schippan eventually moved with her parents to a
small farm at Light Pass near Nuriootpa in 1908.
There her father Matthes (Martin) Schippan died on 31 May 1911.
Mary remained at Light Pass with her mother until she displayed the
first symptoms of tuberculosis and was confined to the Consumptive
Home in Adelaide.
In 1917 that farm was sold and her mother came here to Mount Mary
to live with her son August. What remains of their dwellings can be
seen in the ruins in the nearby paddock.
As this is private property and the paddock grazes sheep, please
do not enter.
With death approaching, Mary moved here to be with the closest
members of her family; her mother and brother, August. Here she
died on 04 Jul 1919, aged 41 and was buried nearby at Bower.
The Cache.
You are looking for a round
‘stormwater’ container. Please ensure it is concealed
when replacing.
There is a non-trackable, personalised coin in
there for the FTF prize.
