A history of my house for a second grade project. This is a micro cache with log so bring a pen or pencil! We are the owners of this property. It is not necessary to enter private property in order to find this cache. The cache is located on the parkway. To verify you are at the correct address, the first three numbers of our address add up to equal the fourth.
My name is Owen and I am 8 years old. I moved to this house when I was 1 1/2. The house was built in 1894. Back then, Evanston had many horses and orchards. Our house is on one of the old farms.
We named our house Ruby when we moved in because my sisters and I used to watch a show called Max and Ruby and my mom thought Ruby was a cool name. My mom always names the houses that she fixes up.
The first family that ever lived here was the Gardner family. They lived here in 1894 until 1900 and had three kids. Next, there was a family who lived here named Hurlbut. The Hurlbuts lived here from 1900 to 1910. They are the ones who built the front porch on our house and also a small addition on the south side of the house. The Hurlbuts did not have any kids.
In 1915, the Butzow’s lived here. When we did construction on the garage, we found a bunch of old receipts and letters from them that they had stuffed in the walls as insulation. The garage was a barn at that time.
The Whitehouse family rented our house around 1930 for $180 dollars a month. They had nine kids. In 1933 there was a new family named Sundquist. They had two daughters. They changed our barn into a garage. Next, the Smith family changed our house into a boarding house from about 1947 to 1957. Then they moved to Florida.
The longest time anyone lived here was the Krieg family. They lived here for about fifty years! They had one son. We do not know if they made any changes to the house.
There was another family who bought the house from Mrs. Krieg and they only lived here for two years. Our family bought the house from them. We did lots of work to the house and barn. Here are some of the things we did:
First, we took off the asbestos siding and found out that our house had lots of fancy shingles underneath. We put a new kitchen where the dining room used to be. We added an addition to the back of the house with a sunroom and screened porch. On the second floor, my room is where an old bathroom and staircase was and we all have ladders from our rooms to secret forts on the third floor.
We also turned our garage into a barn/garage. We have a disco ball upstairs in the loft for parties. When we were doing the work on the garage, we found baby squirrels in a nest. There is a lady who took them to her house to feed them until they could run free.
I hope you had fun searching for and finding the Ruby Cache!
