Geocache Description:

A first cache in the Wairoa township

This lighthouse has interesting history. It was built in 1916 on Pentland Island off Mahia Peninsula but in 1961 the Jaycees decided to move the decomissioned lighthouse to is present location.

The Wairoa Lighthouse was one of the earliest lighthouse sites in New Zealand. Built from solid kauri it was in use from 1878 to 1958. In 1955 a new light on a steel tower was built when the wood started rotting. It was the last lighthouse to use kerosene lamps and clockwork mechanisms.

Wairoa itself is 70 kilometres northeast of Napier, and a similar distance southwest of Gisborne.

Early settlement in the area included a whaling station and trading post, dealing largely in flax. Its initial name was Clyde, but this was changed largely to avoid confusion with Clive near Napier and Clyde in the South Island. The north part of the town is called North Clyde. The town rose to prominence during the New Zealand Wars, during which time it was a garrison town.

Wairoa is largely a farming service town. It is the seat of the Wairoa District Council. The Wairoa District covers the northern half of the bay's coast, and extends from Mahia Peninsula to Lake Waikaremoana, and south to the mouth of the Waikare River. It has a population of around 8400 at the last census.

Since 2005, Wairoa has been host to the annual Wairoa Maori Film Festival, New Zealand's premiere Maori and indigenous film festival, which has hosted film makers from across the nation and around the world.

The cache has a difficulty rating of 3 because if attempted in the daytime you will need extreme stealth, so it is recommended as a night cache.

The cache is a brown eclipse container and you will need to bring your own writing instrument.
