Earthquake Bridge Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Team Gently: This was a pretty clever cache, when it had 3 decoy caches hidden right around it, each of which gave you a clue to the actual cache location. But 4 caches got to be too many to maintain, so we'll retire it.

Geocache Description:

About the Bridge

When I was a kid, we lived a few blocks away from this cool wooden bridge. It looked a lot like a bridge from the book Winnie the Pooh:

Pooh Bridge

My favorite memory of the bridge is from back around 1973/74 when Universal was filming the movie "Earthquake." They built a fake, destroyed version of the bridge about a block east of the real bridge.

They filmed all the pre-earthquake scenes on the real bridge: Intact Bridge

But once the earthquake hits, and the bridge collapses (taking the kid and his bicycle with it into the LA River), the subsequent scenes were filmed using the fake, broken bridge (and some really nice matte paintings): Wrecked Bridge

I remember watching Genevieve Bujold (who played the mom) running along the LA River yelling "Corey! Corey!" And then watching them film all the scenes where she goes down into the "river" to save him, and ends up threatened by water and electricity and so on:

Genevieve Bujold in Peril

Sometime between 1974 and 1994, the bridge was repainted from white to green. (Maybe as a bit of P.R., to offset some of its notoriety from the film?) Then in 1994, the wooden bridge was deemed unsafe and torn down:

... and replaced with the concrete bridge that's there today: Concrete Bridge Today

I hope you enjoyed this brief history, with details and photos lifted from:

About the Cache

A good cache should either have a cool location or a cool hiding method. Hopefully, this has at least one of those.

The cache is actually hidden a little ways from the bridge. (There weren't enough good hiding places right near the bridge itself.)

Log only. Bring your own pen.
