It was the late 80's and Norma and Wes, two avid bird watchers,
decided to have a bird count contest. They each had until noon to
see as many birds as possible, the winner would get bragging rights
and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Norma set out early in the morning hoping to get a head start.
She began her day at Burnaby Lake and Deer Lake and saw several
flocks of Canadian geese totaling 110 birds. Although common birds,
she was glad to have a large number already in the bag. Next she
went to Boundary Bay and saw several Snowy Owls over-wintering on
the coast. After walking up and down the beach she counted a total
of 30. Finally, she finished off the morning with a pair of
Osprey.
Wes was very confident and had a late start, taking time to
enjoy his coffee and a full breakfast. He drove up to Manning Park
and decided to make his way down towards the Fraser Valley. His
first sighting of the day was a flock of 38 Pine Grosbeaks. On his
way down to the valley, he was able to spot a flock of 20 Canadian
geese. Then he explored some lakes and counted 16 Common Loons. As
he raced back to beat the noon finish time he spotted five Belted
Kingfishers and a Robin from his car.
Norma won the bird count, (Wes shouldn’t have stayed in
bed) and an undisclosed sum was exchanged.
