Paul is one of the most gracious cachers on the trail - I always look forward to his kind and encouraging logs. He recently made his 10,000th cache find, but the location for the cache was under snow until the last few weeks, so by the time it was placed, he actually had over 11,000 finds!
As far as the cache goes: we placed it after coming up the ski chair lift (Open weekends, Saturday and Sunday, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend and during Balloon Fiesta), but coming up the Tram would work as well. Otherwise, you have a much longer hike from Sandia Crest parking or Tree Springs Trail parking (or even further away). The Ellis trailhead off the crest road is the easiest hike in at about 1 mile each way. There is only 150-200 ft ascent/descent and it is a road that leads up to the ski area/restaurant, so it is viable year round (and a pretty easy/fun snowshoe hike).
The cache is just off the Crest Trail. You should not have to do anything dangerous or frightening to get to the cache, but there are great views just a few feet away (you might want to tether smaller children since there is no guard rail). Cachers have continued to move around cache to improve placement, this makes it difficult for me to do maintenance. Please leave cache attachment where it is and unscrew bottom to retrieve log, the camo pushes out of the way.
