Una cache che guarda le rive del Piave.

Fossalta di Piave è un comune veneziano di poco più di 4mila
abitanti, situato lungo il percorso del fiume Piave.
La cache è situata proprio sull'argine che divide il comune dalle
sponde del "Fiume Sacro alla Patria", così soprannominato in
memoria dei combattimenti di cui fu teatro durante la prima guerra
mondiale.
La sera dell'8 luglio 1918 a Fossalta, il celebre scrittore
americano Ernest Hemingway, allora diciottenne, impegnato
nel suo servizio di assistenza ai soldati italiani con la Croce
Rossa Americana, fu ferito lungo la sponda del Piave da una granata
austriaca esplosa a poca distanza da lui. Nell'esplosione morì un
militare italiano ma Hemingway, benché ferito, riuscì a soccorrere
un altro italiano ferito e a trascinarlo lontano dal fuoco nemico.
Raggiunto ancora al ginocchio da colpi di mitragliatrice riuscì
comunque a trascinarsi ancora, portando in salvo se stesso e
l'italiano. Il gesto gli valse la medaglia d'argento al valore
assegnatagli dal Regno d'Italia, e un'altra onorificenza, la Croce
di Guerra, da parte del governo degli Stati Uniti.
Questa sua drammatica esperienza, proseguita poi con una lunga
degenza negli ospedali militari (furono necessarie 12 operazioni
chirurgiche per estrarre le oltre 200 schegge che gli erano entrate
nella gamba), fu la base per il suo famoso romanzo "Addio
alle armi".
Nel 1979 fu posta sull'argine del Piave una lapide in ricordo di H.
Hemingway, prima pietra ideale di quello che diventò nel 1983 il
"Battistero", monumento di pace, voluto dai "Ragazzi del 99".
La cache è situata nei pressi del battistero, lungo l'argine, in
una zona facilmente raggiungibile da tutti, ed è di dimensioni
micro.
Ricordarsi di portare una penna per il log, e riposizionare la
cache ESATTAMENTE dove era.
ATTENZIONE: il ponte sul Piave nelle immediate vicinanze è privato
e pertanto a pagamento. Tenetene conto nel calcolo del vostro
itinerario di viaggio ;-)

Fossalta di Piave is a small town located along the Piave
river.
This river, in 1918 (during World War I) was the scene of Battle of
the Piave River, the last major Austro-Hungarian attack on the
Italian Front, which failed after costing Austria-Hungary nearly
200,000 casualties. The Battle of the Piave was the decisive battle
of World War I on the Italian Front. The river it is thus called in
Italy "Fiume Sacro alla Patria" (Sacred River of the
Homeland).
In 1918 Hemingway responded to a Red Cross recruitment effort and
signed on to be an ambulance driver in Italy.
After a few weeks in Milan, he was stationed at Fossalta di Piave.
On July 8 he was seriously wounded by mortar fire, having just
returned from the canteen to deliver chocolate and cigarettes to
the men at the front line. Despite his wounds, Hemingway carried an
Italian soldier to safety, for which he received the Italian Silver
Medal of Bravery. Still only eighteen, Hemingway said of the
incident: "When you go to war as a boy you have a great illusion of
immortality. Other people get killed; not you ... Then when you are
badly wounded the first time you lose that illusion and you know it
can happen to you."
This dramatic experience, which was the basis for his famous novel
"A Farewell to Arms", is remembered by the plaque along the bank,
close to the cache.
The near Baptistery, Monument for Peace, initiated by "i ragazzi
del '99" (the boys of '99), is above all a reminder of peace and
brotherhood for all people and particularly for future
generations.
The cache is a micro cache located near the Baptistery. Bring a pen
for the logbook, and replace the cache EXACTLY where you have found
it!
