Knights and Bandits Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Southerntrekker: Hi There

As the owner has not responded to either my log or my colleague's previous log requesting that they check this cache I am archiving it.

Please note that once the cache has been archived, this can not be undone. This is explained in the Help Center - http://support.groundspeak.com//index.php?pg=kb.page&id=70

You will need to create a new listing, put it back in for review and as long as it meets today's guidelines and no other caches have been published in the area causing a proximity problem, then it will be published.

Regards

Geocache Description:

Take the B4407 towards Ysbyty Ifan. Immediately after you enter the Village, take the next left and go over the bridge. The road goes round to the left and St John the Baptist Church can be seen on the left-hand side. There is parking on the roadside by the Church.
As with most churchyards, please take care when you walk around as the ground can be uneven. Also please try to walk around the graves rather than over them.

The present church of St. John the Baptist was built on the identical site of the medieval church established by the Hospitaller Knights of St. John of Jerusalem around 1190. Hence the “Knights” in the title, but where do the bandits come in?
The Knights Hospitallers were granted ‘rights of sanctuary’ for their tenants, and protection against prosecution in Royal courts. The Hospice was destroyed by fire around 1400, during Owain Glyndwr’s uprising. It was re-built; but after the uprising, law and order was breaking down everywhere, and the rights of sanctuary offered by the Knights were open to abuse. Believing themselves to be beyond the reach of the law, a horde of bandits settled in Ysbyty Ifan. They raided, pillaged, raped and murdered in the surrounding countryside – hence the Bandits!
St John’s Church holds many more tales and secrets, why not pop in if you have time? The Church welcomes visitors and is open daily between 10am & 6pm. Whilst looking around, please remember that they are places of worship and contemplation, and the heritage is much valued by the local communities.

The cache is a round black container and it has a logbook, pencil and slate coin inside. Happy hunting!
Note: The co-ordinates were averaged out over several readings.
