Alla forra non ci si arriva per caso. Bisogna andarci apposta. E cercarla non è facile. A guidare i nostri passi è il ricordo lontano della leggenda dell’ eremita che visse in questa forra tra il 1918 e il 1932. A guidare i nostri passi è la volontà di trovare la grotta di Maurizio.
Maurizio nacque a Gambassi nel 1859, fu muratore, barbiere, sarto, il lavoro non lo spaventava, era conosciuto da tutti. Ma da tutti fuggiva appena poteva, rifugiandosi dapprima presso i frati del convento di S. Vivaldo (vedi geocache: La Gerusalemme di Toscana), poi in una grotta nei pressi della cappella di S. Ilario (vedi geocache: Nel boschetto della mia fantasia), finchè non trovò nella forra la sua Shangri-là.
La solitudine è per lui il modo di avvicinarsi a Dio e le sue mani il mezzo per dimostrare la sua devozione. Costruisce nella forra la Gerusalemme che ha nella sua mente, un insieme di cappelle, statue, passerelle, scale.
Tanti erano gli abitanti dei paesi vicini che negli anni 20 e 30 si recavano in pellegrinaggio presso le grotte di Maurizio ed è anche questo il motivo per cui la leggenda dura fino ad oggi.
Dopo la sua morte il complesso mauriziano è andato in rovina, la grotta si è riempita d’ acqua, della chiesina è rimasto solo il basamento, alcune statue sono prive di teste o braccia, ma la forra mantiene intatto il suo aspetto magico e incantatore che da solo vale la non facile discesa alla ricerca di questo cache.
Il cache è un contenitore plastico tipo tupperware di piccole/medie dimensioni e si trova in prossimità della grotta principale. Il sentiero nr.1 che conduce alla grotta è ben nascosto (vi indico le coordinate dell’ inizio del sentiero) però dopo è ben segnalato dai cartelli messi dal CAI ed è ben percorribile anche se a tratti scivoloso.
Attenzione: vista la difficoltà del terreno e l’ isolamento del luogo sconsiglio di cercare il cache da soli, soprattutto se non si è escursionisti abituali. Utilizzare scarpe adatte a escursioni. La grotta non è l’ unica dimostrazione della presenza dell’ eremita molti sono i segni della mano di Maurizio intorno ad essa ma perlustrare la zona necessita la presenza di persone esperte e di equipaggiamento adatto, non ci riteniamo responsabili dell’ incoscienza delle persone.

We don't find the gorge by accident. We must go there on purpose. And find the gorge is not easy. To guide our feet is the memory of the legend of the hermit who lived in the gorge between 1918 and 1932. To guide our feet is the desire to find the cave of Maurizio.
Maurizio was born in Gambassi in 1859, he was a bricklayer, a barber, a tailor, work isn't frightened him, he was know by all. But he fled from all, taking refuge first with the friars of the convent of S. Vivaldo (see geocache: La Gerusalemme di Toscana), then in a cave near the chapel of St. Ilario (see geocache: Nel boschetto della mia fantasia), until he found in the gorge his perfect place.
Solitude is the way for him to get closer to God and his hands the means to prove his devotion. Constructs in the gorge Jerusalem he has in his mind, a series of chapels, statues, walkways, stairs.
Many were the inhabitants of neighboring countries in the 20's and 30's that went on pilgrimage to the caves of Maurizio and this is also the reason why the legend endures to these days.
After his death the Mauritian complex is ruined, the cave was filled with some water, the church is left with only its base, some of the statues have no heads or arms, but the gorge retains its magic aspect that will repay you the arduous descent to this cache.
The cache is a plastic tupperware type box of small/medium size, hidden near the principal cave. The path nr. 1 leading to cave is well hidden (I'll tell you the coordinates of the beginning of the path) but then is well marked by signs placed by the CAI (Italian alpine club) is easily navigable and even if sometimes slippery.
Please note: Due to the difficulty of the terrain and the isolation of the place I don't advise you to look for the cache alone, especially if you are not habitual walkers. Please use shoes suitable for hiking. The cave is not the only evidence of the presence of hermit, there are many signs of the hand of Mauritius around the area but it requires the presence of experienced staff and proper equipment, we are not responsible of the unconscious people.
