Geocache Description:

Penmachno is on the B4406 which can be reached from the A5 between Betws y coed and Pentrefoelas. Drive into Penmachno, the road turns to the right, then shortly after to the left. At this left bend take the first road on your right. St Tudclud’s Church is on your right hand side. You can park on the roadside near the church.
As with most churchyards, please take care when you walk around as the ground can be uneven. Also please try to walk around the graves rather than over them

So why “A Prince in Penmachno”?

St Tudclud’s contains an outstanding collection of inscribed stones, and there is one that dates from the 13th century. This stone may be of particular interest to those of you who follow the stories of the Princes of Gwynedd.

St Enclydwyn’s was reputedly the burial site for Iorwerth ab Owain Gwynedd (1145-1174), also known as Iorwerth Drwyndwn (broken nose, snubnose or flatnose). Iorwerth was the eldest legitimate son of Owain Gwynedd and heir to the Kingdom of Gwynedd, but it is said that he was not allowed to take the crown because of his irregular facial features!

Iorwerth Drwyndwn was killed in battle at Pennant Melangell in Powys, during the wars deciding the succession following the death of his father. His son went on to unite the realm and become one of Wales’ most famous monarchs – Llywelyn the Great.

Many believe that the 13th century gravestone in St Tudclud’s once marked the final resting place of Iorwerth here in Penmachno. Hence “A Prince in Penmachno”!

St Tudclud’s Church holds many more tales and secrets, why not pop in if you have time? The Church welcomes visitors and is open daily between 9am & 5pm – there is even an “honesty box” hot drinks machine in the church for you to refresh yourselves after your geocaching. Whilst looking around, please remember that they are places of worship and contemplation, and the heritage is much valued by the local communities.

The cache is a camouflaged nano container and it has a logbook, pencil sharpener and pencil inside. Happy hunting!
Note: The co-ordinates were averaged out over several readings.
