Arf! Extreme Park Cycling

The Big Four Bridge Project completion is now five years overdue and so is this series. The bridge is not accessible but the parking lot and restroom facilities are finally open. There's a nice spiral ramp to look at with plenty of parking underneath along the Riverwalk. So, let's begin using it with the first-ever Big Four Bridge Event!

What: Cycling to The Portland Wharf Overlook and back, ~10 mile round trip, ~4 hours.
When: 6/25/11, 0800 hours.
Where: Big Four Bridge parking area (GCKF7G - nearest cache).
Who: Anyone who likes to cycle. Rental bicycles are available at Waterfront Park.
What to expect: This is an easy-paced bicycling event along the paved Louisville Riverwalk to the historic Portland Wharf overlook. Along the way there will be historic points of interest, a stop at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Public Access Area to observe the workings of the McAlpine Locks from their new observation deck, and to view their historic Ohio River display of items relating to the Portland Canal and Shippingport. You won't be disappointed.

The ride to the Portland Wharf Overlook will take about 1.5 hours (cache stops). On the return we'll stop at McAlpine Locks Public Use area for a 'break' (clean restrooms and water here). The return to BFB parking area will take ~30 minutes.

This is basically a flat ride along the river with a couple of mild grades up and onto the floodwall (levee). At no time will we ride on -BUSY- CITY STREETS!

There will be new and old caches along the way plus a CHIRP-ASSISTED cache for demonstration purposes (this event only).
Those who are 'Chirp-capable' should be chirp enabled for this ride. There will be no warning!

SAFETY: This is my favorite bike route and it's a SAFE RIDE all the way! We will be cycling on the Riverwalk Trail with a short ride on an old-town SIDEWALK (Chirp!) and not pedaling on the 'busy' city streets.

Cyclists under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet (Louisville Parks Helmet Law) - I'll be wearing mine!
