The cache is a medium-sized tupperware-type container - rectangular in shape, and cammo'd. There are lots of swapsies, a log and a pen. There is loads of room for travel bugs and geocoins.
The island is best approaced from the carpark of The Quays Public House and Restaurant, at the south end of the village and the harbour. You will pass a mural dedicated to George Best, as you enter the carpark. George frequented The Quays during the time he lived just outside the village.
There is also roadside parking, and a carparking area in front of the chip shop.
There is a worn path around much of the island, or you could climb up and over the top. It is not a strenuous climb.
Before setting out, please check the times of High and Low tides. Go to Portavogie Tide Information from the BBC for more information
It took us 45 minutes in total to walk out to the island, look around and consider somewhere suitable to hide the cache, then return to the car in the carpark, without rushing.
I personally would not encourage taking a dog with you as the first part of the walk includes trunching along over a path absolutely covered with clam shells, although these could be avoided with some consideration. Please see the photo. This is the densest area of the path. I did see someone walking a dog past this when we were placing the cache.
It would be advisable to wear sturdy shoes or boots.
There is some debris that has been washed up from fishing boats, in the form of plastic containers, but there is extremly little in the way of 'normal' rubbish. There is what I imagine to be part of a carcas of an old sailing vessel on the beach.
