The horizontal figure 8 or infinity symbol featured on the Métis
flag was originally carried by French 'half-breeds' with pride. The
Infinity symbol that has two meanings: The joining of two cultures
& The existence of a people forever.
Historically the Métis were strongly connected with the North
West Company which was a fur trading company that rivalled Hudson
Bay Company. They often fought for NWC causes over the years. In a
gift giving ceremony in 1814, NWC partner Alexander MacDonnell
presented the Métis with this flag and it soon became a trademark
for the nation.
Original flag was sewn by John Mcdonnel from bits and pieces
they had. Red with white unity sign on it.Today the Metis use the
many use the blue with the white lazy eight. The Métis flag is
carried and flown today as a symbol of continuity and pride.
