Geocache Description:

One of historical monument in Utsunomiya.

Shinohara family was a successful marchant since 18th century and run soy source production and trading of fertilizer. The house was build in 1895 and this main building has survived the war. It is specified as a important cultural property by City of Utusnomiya and also by Japanese government.
The house is open for the public with a small fees of 100 yen adult and 50 yen for pupils.

国指定重要文化財・市指定有形文化財（有形文化財・建造物）

　宇都宮市を代表する旧家の一つである篠原家は、江戸時代（18世紀の終わり頃）から奥州街道口の現在の場所で、醤油醸造業や肥料商を営んでいました。現在の旧篠原家住宅は、明治28年(1895) に建てられたものです。第二次世界大戦の戦災により、母屋と石倉3棟を残して、醤油醸造蔵や米倉などの建物は焼失してしまいましたが、明治時代の豪商の姿を今日に伝える貴重な建造物となっています。
　黒漆喰や大谷石を用いた外壁や、商家を特徴付ける店先の格子などとともに、1・2階合わせて100坪という規模の大きさが、堂々たる風格を形作り、JR宇都宮駅前の歴史的シンボルとなっています。
　なお、この住宅は、平成7年11月27日に宇都宮市の文化財に指定され、平成8年2月26日に宇都宮市に寄贈されました。また、平成12年5月25日には主屋と新蔵が国の重要文化財に指定されました。復元・修復工事を経て、平成9年3月1日から一般公開しております。
