A nice short hike on Idaho State lands around Rathdrum Mountain. Cache is easy to find. The last 100 feet are on a steep embankment, but nothing you can't handle!
NOTE: The gate to drive to this cache is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It can be visited in the off season, but you will have to park and walk about 1-1/2 miles along the road to the cache.
This cache is in a great hiking, riding, etc... area near Rathdrum Mountain. The cache is only about five minutes from a parking spot, but you can keep hiking for miles along the same path if you desire. I put the cache a short way up on a steep embankment to keep it safe from muggles and spring floods. It might be slick in the rain.
Take Hidden Valley road until it ends. Go right on to Nelson Loop road. You will pass a "Dead End Sign" at the beginning of Nelson Loop Rd. Turn Right on to Scenic Lodge Rd(The first Unmarked dirt road). When you are a 1/4 mile from the cache there will be a turn off to a large flat area you can park. You can drive beyond the parking area with a high clearance vehicle, but I recommend parking here and walking in. The roads up to this parking spot are well maintained and accessible with most vehicles.
The cache is near private timber land. You will need to pass through an Inland Empire Paper Company checkpoint on scenic lodge road to get here. A gatekeeper camps here during the summer. Tell the gate keeper that you will be staying on state land, and you will not be going on to the timber land. They will let you pass. The border to the timber land is two miles past the check point, and the border is well marked. The cache is well before that point.
You can get a permit from Inland Empire Paper Company to use the private timber land for recreation if you decide you like this area. The Cache is near a very lovely creek. I hope you enjoy your hike!
