Sudbrook Chapel Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Big Ragnar: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

The cache is a small clip lock box in a camouflage pouch. There is no need to enter and further you are not permitted to enter the church railings to find it.

The cache has been placed with the kind permission of CADW. Please respect the site as it is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Sudbrook Chapel (The Church of the Holy Trinity) is believed to date from the 12th Century, with the chancel added in the 14th Century and the south porch added in the late 15th or 16th Centuries. The chapel fell out of use in the late 17th or early 18th Century with the last burial being that of a sea captain in 1757.

The chapel lies on part of a Scheduled Ancient Monument known as Sudbrook Camp and dates from the Iron Age – Roman period. It would have been constructed as roughly circular with three ramparts but has been eroded by the sea on the south side. It is suggested that a fourth rampart may have existed between the monument and the former Paper Mill but no evidence was found during fieldwork in 2001.

Geophysics undertaken in 1999 found evidence of three hut circles and a rectangular building dated to the 1930s during excavations undertaken in the 1930s.

The Scheduled Ancient Monument now forms part of a publicly accessible recreation area and is owned by the adjoining former Paper Mill. From the Scheduled Ancient Monument you can walk alongside the estuary on a public footpath outside the boundary of the former Paper Mill which has recently been sold and will at some point be brought forward for redevelopment and will start a new chapter in the history of the area.
