From Thompson Falls, MT., take highway 200 east, about 12 miles along the Clark Fork River. There is a nice pull-off area to park. Hike a couple hundred feet up moderate slope, following a wide pathway to a short segment of the old trail route. Enjoy the view of the Clark Fork River valley from here.
This geocache is being placed in commemoration of the world's greatest surveyor, map maker, fur trader and explorer – David Thompson. David Thompson and his
Northwest Fur Company were the first European contacts, to interact with Native American Indians in northwest Montana and large portions of N. Idaho,
Washington and Alberta and British Columbia, CA. Thompson and his NWCo. voyageurs constructed the 1809 Saleesh House fur post, a few miles downstream
from this location. Thompson and his men used this “Road to the Buffalo” when traveling with horses over Bad Rock. This year marks the 200th anniversary of
David Thompsons passage through the area, in route to the Pacific Ocean. The 2011 David Thompson Columbia River Canoe Brigade will be passing through the
Thompson Falls, MT. area this summer – following David Thompson's journey of 1811.
The cache contains cool swag and stuff of limited size and amount, including: pen and log book, FTF prize: copy of David Thompson's 1817 map covering this area,
deck of cards, large buffalo capsule, Scotchman Peaks Wilderness map, trackable micro-coin and additional items to be determined.
History: (excerpts taken from the book David Thompson, The Saleesh House Period – 1807-1812 - Sometimes Only Horses to Eat, by Carl Haywood).
This cache is placed along a segment of the old trail route known as “Road to the Buffalo” “Road to the Buffalo was a large system of trails used by indian tribes,to access bison herds East of the Continental Divide. It had probably been used for hundreds of years before the arrival of the Europeans – the road to the buffalo was later referred to as the Kootenai Trail and is noted on the late 19th century
GLO survey maps” (Haywood, page 113). Bad Rock: “Surrounded on three sides
by steep, shale slides and with its base at the very edge of the waters of the Saleesh River, Bad Rock was probably the most hazardous part of the entire Road
to the Buffalo. It was mentioned in the diaries and journals of practically every man who crossed it between 1809 and the 1850's.”(Haywood, page 123).
This summer, the 2011 David Thompson Canoe Brigade will be traveling from British Columbia, Canada to Astoria, Oregon in honor of the 200th anniversary of
David Thompson's voyage across the Pacific Northwest. Ten large six-person - 25' canoes, will arrive in Thompson Falls, MT. on Thursday, June 9th to begin a
meet & greet geocaching event (GC2T1X8) The voyageurs will continue down the Clark Fork River – towards the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, on Saturday.
