Geocache Description:

This is part of a series of 4 multi caches in Ludlow. Each cache contains part of the co-ordinates for a bonus cache as follows:
N [town trail 1] [town trail 2] W [chapels and churches] [town walls].
This multi visits the sites of the old town gates and walls. The co-ordinates givern are for the tourist information office, a good place to pick up a map to help you.

Please make sure the cache is well hidden when replaced. Extreme stealth will be needed!

Ludlow, built as a planned town, protected by the castle, over 900 years ago, is now a busy market town. The town has prospered in the past from the wool and cloth trades and was home to the Council of the Marches, which ruled the border counties and Wales untill 1689. A fashionable social centre in Georgian times, now famed for it's gastronomic reputation.

Ludlow has good road and rail links. There is on street parking in Ludlow, but it can br difficult and the parking wardens are very efficient! We recommend either the park and ride just off the A49 [Mon - Sat] or the pay and display carpark near the station.

As a "frontier" town, Ludlow needed strong defences. "Murage" a tax for maintaining town walls was granted in 1233 and the walls were in place by 1270. The walls fell into disrepair after the castle was abandoned in the late 17th century.
