Geocache Description:

Continuing the Poppies on Parade series started by "Mr Nibbler"

"FOWLMERE, in Domesday Book "Fugelesmare, is a parish, 6 miles north-east from Royston, 2½ south-east from the Shepreth station on the Hitchin, Royston and Cambridge line of the London and North Eastern railway, and 9 south from Cambridge, in the hundred of Thriplow, petty sessional division of Arrington and Melbourn, union and county court district of Royston, rural deanery of Barton, archdeaconry and diocese of Ely."

"The soil and subsoil are chalky and gravelly. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans and green crops. The area is 2,272 acres ; the population in 1921 was 494."

[Kelly's Directory - Cambridgeshire - 1929]

----

As with every other village and town in the UK there is a memorial in Fowlmere to those men lost in the great Wars. At the time of placing (June), the fields around the village abound with poppies, making this even more poignant. Last year I visited Flanders Fields near Ypres in Belgium which is a terribly moving place and when I see the poppies I am always reminded of the poem:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The cache is not on the memorial. Please be vigilant of villagers (including myself) and be careful of the roads with kids around. There is on road parking near the cache. Please be subtle and replace carefully.

Finally please spare a thought when collecting for those who gave their lives whose names are inscribed here.
