Geocache Description:

The micro cache is at the north end of the Ponce Canal which is a mosquito control ditch that is cleared of obstructions by persons unknown to Bluez. This canal can be accessed at the location of the Yak 1 micro cache or at a point that is about 0.7 miles north. A nearby kayak launch spot is the Ponce de Leon Historical Park.

The history of the mosquito control ditching efforts goes back over 100 years. The idea was to dewater “swamps” and thus make the habitat less friendly to mosquitoes and open up the area so that fish would eat mosquito larvae. The need to maintain these ditches for mosquito control changed at the end of World War II because DDT became widely available. The initial results of the DDT application were amazingly good, if you are trying to control mosquitoes. However, the mosquito populations developed resistance to DDT and this compound began to migrate up the food chain.

“Swamps” became valued as wetlands and mosquito control ditching efforts stopped along with the broad scale application of many chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides. The mangrove mosquito control ditch legacy now provides kayak trails and habitat for numerous small swimming critters. The U.S. Geological Survey studied these mangrove mosquito control ditches and determined that they were more similar to tidal creeks than stormwater ditches. Send me an e-mail if you are interested in a copy of a paper in this subject.

The micro cache can only be accessed by a small vessel like a kayak. Do not attempt to swim in to the cache location. You need to bring your own pencil and you do not need to get out of your kayak. If you made it this far on water you should look for a small green container attached to a branch. The other micro was replaced as it leaked and a 1896 Indian Head penny was stashed in the cache.
