Geocache Description:

The Texas Spirit Quest
is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.

There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural communities across Texas. This series will introduce you to many of them. The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries, tombstones and local lore.

This site was designated a historic cemetery back in 2007, and hence has an official marker posted inside its gates. The cemetery was dedicated in 1887 to serve the Nelleville community; however, burials took place here as early as 1883. There are numerous unmarked graves on the grounds, and at least seven disinterments took place for reburials at other locations. The last burial here was in 1958.

Despite the hand-painted sign alongside the road and the ramshackle barbed wire fence, the site, which is a few dozen feet to the south of the initial access point, is actually in pretty good shape. It is surrounded by a chain link fence and the grounds have recently been tended to. As always, any refinements to the listed coordinates are welcomed.
