Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in hounor of R's Grandpa and Grandma Kidd. It is also in hounour of R's Uncle Hilliard and Aunt Elsie Ashton.
Uncle Hilliard was killed in the First World War and Aunt Elsie lived in Alberta so we wanted to have this cache as part of our Aunt's and Uncle's series including Hilliard and Elsie.

This cache is placed with the APPROVAL of the owners of the property--R's Cousin Pat and her son Bruce & Elan. Feel free to look for the cache as they know it is there and are OK with you looking for it

The below is a writeup written by Pat Kidd(for the Rosetown Reflections--The People and History of Rosetown and District.)--Pat owns the property you are now standing on IF you are at GZ of this cache. Pat is R's cousin and has lived here at Grandpa and Grandmas farm yard site since the Spring of 1968 after buying the farm from R's Uncle Art. The Kidd History:Grandpa(Edward) and Grandma(Evalyne)
Ed Kidd was born in Warsaw Ont. on May 3,1872. He was the only son of James Kidd and Mary Anne Tucker. He had three sisters--Rose,Emma and Lillian. They were farmers. He married Evalyne Johnson on June 12,1895. Their first child Hilliard was born in 1896,Myrtle in 1897(died in infancy),Eva in 1898 and Frank in 1903. Ed decided to come West in 1904 from Peterborough,Ont. He came by train to Hanley and drove to Zealandia over prarie that had not even a wheel mark on it. He bought Section 1- 31-13 W3 and built a sod barn and house. He returned to Ont. in the fall. In the Spring of 1905 he arrived in Saskatoon with his wife and 4 children. He bought 4 oxen,4 horses, one cow,and 12 chickens. Tools were few--a hammer, square and a saw. The belief was that this was the Land Of Opportunity. A fourth son was born on Dec.1 1905. He was the First White child to be born in the district and was named Hadden Garfield. In 1906, the town of Zealandia had a store and a post office. In 1907 a cyclone did much damage to the area where Zealandia now is.It was first thought that the railway would be 5 miles east of Zealandia. The family was growing. In 1907 Edith was born Bertha in 1909, and Art in 1910; Elsie in 1912;Mary in 1914 and Allan(R's dad) in 1916.Allan was the only child that was actually born in a hospital. At the time this article was written Allan was the last surviving member of the family. The first school was built on Ed Kidds land Section 1-31-13W3. It had no name but bore the number 1613.
In late 1908 the rail reached Zealandia. In no time there were lumberyards, stores,a 50 room hotel.etc. It was a booming thriving, prosperous town. WW1 broke out in 1914. A lot of Zealandia boys enlisted,Hilliard being one of them.He lost his life at war in France in 1917. In 1916,Ed moved his family to the "SUB". It was a bigger house with Power. He had his own power plant. Ed was involved in the Agricultural Society Fall fair.He was hounourary president in 1917. Evalyne was also a director. A new brick school was built in 1912 at a cost of $12,000. In 1915 Ed started a milk delivery service to the town. He started with a horse and wagon, then went to pulling it himself and finally using his dog Rover with a wagon or sleigh. There were only a few runaways and the business lasted 18 1/2 years.By then his sons were farming. Evalyne after raising 11 children started singing in the choir and was a member of the Zealandia WA. They knitted and packed boxes for soldiers overseas. There was curling and working at the rink for bonspiels. The 5 sons All became farmers. Art kidd had 1/2 of 1-31-13W3 and Allan had the other 1/2. This land is still owned today by his grandsons Barry and Bruce Kidd.So in 2004 this land has been 100 years of farming it by a Kidd. Ed and Evalyne had 33 grandchildren which they enjoyed. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniv.on June 12,1957. Evalyne passed away on June 6,1958 and Ed on Oct.6,1958.
THEY WERE TRUE PIONEERS.
The Kidd Family continue to Hounour their heritage with an Annual Kidd Family Reunion and 2012 will be the 54th consecutive Family Reunion and a Special 55th Reunion Hounouring the Kidd's is being planned for 2013.

Aunt Elsie Ashton moved to Alberta when R was young. R remembers Aunt Elsie and Uncle Jack and the "kids" coming back to the Sub each year to visit Grandpa and Grandma and we always had a Blast(ask R about the 22 shell episode) We used to go to Red Water and Devon Alberta to vist and R's dad and mom travelled for many years to the US in the winter months with Aunt Elsie and Uncle Jack. R's cousin Pat was one of their daughters and she has lived here on the farm for many many years. R would like to THANK PAT for allowing this cache to be placed here where it is to Hounor Grandpa,Grandma,Uncle Hilliard and Aunt Elsie. We hope you enjoy the Aunt and Uncle Series with only 1 left to place yet--one for Aunt Bert who lived in Lumsden before retireing to Airdrie Alberta so look forward to Aunt Berts cache this Spring/Summer.
We hope you will enjoy a bit of information on our Kidd Family and Enjoy the Hunt for this cache and Cache On.
This cache was placed way back on our Family Reunion weekend of June 12 2011 R is embarassed that it has taken this long to get this writeup done but was looking for the info from the Roseton Reflections books.
