Geocache Description:

On 11 December 1911, William Cassidy, a quarryman employed at the Tarakohe Cement Works, returning from a holiday, took a four-wheeler buggy from the Telegraph Hotel to Tarakohe along with three other passengers. He was sitting on the front seat of the buggy between carrier Arthur Cann and the cement works foreman Patrick Lynch.

After two miles, Lynch got down from the buggy and rode the horse he had tied on behind. As the buggy went round the "very tricky bend", Cassidy stood up, reeled and fell headlong along the shaft and struck his head. One of the passengers behind the driver helped Lynch lift Cassidy back into the buggy which then returned to the hotel and Cassidy was put to bed. After examination by the doctor he was found to have a fractured spine. He was transferred to Nelson Hospital where he died from his injuries on 21 December. The opinion was that Cassidy had not been sober at the time of the accident. Inference made at the inquest into his death was that Cassidy had stood up in a drunken state, lost his balance on going round the corner and had fallen.

Information sourced from Heritage Golden Bay.

This intersection is known to locals as Cassidy's Corner.

The cache is a small black tube container. No pen so you will need to bring your own.
